CAN Makes Rare Track Available, Singles Compilation Out 6/16

CAN

THE SINGLES OUT JUNE 16

LISTEN TO RARE TRACK
"SHIKAKO MARU TEN"

CAN The Singles - a collection of all of the band’s single releases - is out June 16 on triple vinyl, download, CD and streaming services.

Included in The Singles tracklist is “Shikako Maru Ten,” which is now available for the first time ever on digital services. Listen via YouTube or Spotify.

“Shikako Maru Ten” was the B-side to “Spoon,” which was a Top 10 hit in Germany in 1972. The singles on this compilation are all presented in their original 7” version and “Shikako Maru Ten,” which never appeared on a studio album, is available here for the first time on vinyl outside its original release.

This unique document is the first time the singles have been presented together and shows the breadth of CAN’s influential career, from well-loved tracks like “Halleluwah,” “Vitamin C” and “I Want More” to more obscure singles such as “Silent Night” and "Turtles Have Short Legs". Preorder The Singles HERE.

The Barbican in London recently hosted a very special event to mark CAN’s 50th anniversary year: Irmin Schmidt conducted the London Symphony Orchestra, presenting the world premiere of an original orchestral work composed by Schmidt and Gregor Schwellenbach called CAN Dialog while a specially curated supergroup brought together by Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore and featuring CAN’s first singer Malcolm Mooney performed a set of CAN tracks, including “She Brings The Rain,” “Yoo Doo Right” and “Mother Sky.”

CAN, founded in 1967, released their debut album Monster Movie (1969) which set them apart from the mainstream, carving out a sound that transcended the boundaries of experimental electronic, jazz and modern classical music. CAN’s influence extends from post-punk musicians such as Joy Division and Primal Scream, through avant-garde composers including Bernhard Lang and Radiohead. Schmidt himself began his musical career as a pupil of Stockhausen and Ligeti, and conducted numerous high-profile orchestras in his native Germany and abroad. Hearing the sounds of Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa in the ‘60s led to the formation of CAN but Schmidt never lost touch with his avant-garde classical upbringing, and it is to Schmidt that CAN owed much of its musical eclecticism.

In spring 2018, Faber & Faber will publish a new book devoted to CAN titled All Gates Open. The special edition will come in two volumes: one will be the first complete, authorized biography of the band written by Rob Young and the second, CAN Kiosk by Irmin Schmidt, is a collage of thoughts, visuals and interviews (interviews collated by Max Dax and Robert Defcon).

LEGENDARY AMERICAN BAND ANNOUNCES
UNPRECEDENTED LIVE COLLECTION

ALL-NEW RECORDINGS REINVENT
EXTRAORDINARY CANON OF CLASSICS,
INCLUDING "BLISTER IN THE SUN," "ADD IT UP,"
AND "GONE DADDY GONE"

NORTH AMERICAN LIVE SCHEDULE BEGINS JULY 7
IN GRAND RAPIDS, MI

SUMMER CO-HEADLINE TOUR WITH ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN
GETS UNDERWAY JULY 11 IN PHILADELPHIA, PA

2 MICS & THE TRUTH: UNPLUGGED & UNHINGED IN AMERICA
ARRIVES VIA PIAS ON FRIDAY, JULY 7

(New York, NY) - Violent Femmes have announced details of a remarkable new collection of unprecedented live recordings. 2 MICS & THE TRUTH: UNPLUGGED & UNHINGED IN AMERICAarrives via PIAS on Friday, July 7.

2 MICS & THE TRUTH: UNPLUGGED & UNHINGED IN AMERICA sees Violent Femmes reinventing their own extraordinary canon with all-new live performances, including rearranged classics, songs played live for the first time, spontaneous requests, and random improvisations. Featuring The Horns of Dilemma, Violent Femmes' ever-evolving cabal of multi-instrumentalist backing musicians, the album was recorded last year as the band visited public radio stations and music media outlets across the country in support of their acclaimed ninth studio album, WE CAN DO ANYTHING. Always eager to push their sound forward, the Milwaukee-based combo brought with them a pair of Ear Trumpet Labs Edwina microphones, specialized bluegrass mics that allowed Gordon Gano (voice and guitar/banjo/fiddle) and Brian Ritchie (acoustic bass guitar and vocal) to play and record in close proximity. Backing musicians - including baritone saxophonist Blaise Garza and special guests like banjo master Tony Trischka and legendary Television drummer Billy Ficca - were tracked through sound bleed in the tradition of the early jazz, blues, country, rembetika, rockabilly, and folk records which informed the Violent Femmes aesthetic from the jump. Percussionist John Sparrow's innovative use of a Weber Grill as a rhythm instrument enabled Violent Femmes to stand close together around the two mics and play in perfect balance, the metallic tones meshing with Ritchie's acoustic bass and Gano's strummed guitar.

"This is the first time we've delivered a full scale recording to the public which captures the sound and spirit of the band the way we play together when we're working out songs in the hotel or dressing room," says Brian Ritchie. "This project refocuses attention upon the repertoire as a whole by stripping songs to their essentials, conveying them without artifice, and removing them from any timeline. It's the closest we've gotten to the essence of Violent Femmes."

2 MICS & THE TRUTH: UNPLUGGED & UNHINGED IN AMERICA will be available on CD, digital download, and 2 LP vinyl, with the latter edition featuring five additional songs.  A complete track listing is below.

Violent Femmes will celebrate 2 MICS & THE TRUTH with a wide-ranging North American summer tour including headline shows and a co-headline trek alongside Echo & The Bunnymen beginning Tuesday, July 11 at Philadelphia, PA's Skyline Stage at The Mann and then continuing through early August. For complete details and ticket information, please see www.vfemmes.com/tour.html

A Giant Dog announce new album Toy, out August 25 worldwide, share live favorite “Photograph”

A Giant Dog announce new album Toy, out August 25 worldwide, share live favorite “Photograph”

On August 25, Austin’s punk rock heroes A Giant Dog are back with Toy! Along with an album trailer shared last night, the quintet now presents “Photograph,” a love song about lasting devotion and desire for one’s lover even as their body succumbs to the ravages of time. Aww… Check them both out below:

Toy, the fourth LP from A Giant Dog and their second for Merge, captures the Austin quintet at the height of their powers. A solid year of road-dogging and woodshedding has made the band tighter than ever, the charging dynamo of Andrew Cashen and Andy Bauer’s guitars in lockstep with the primal chug of the rhythm section, Graham Low on bass and Daniel Blanchard on drums, in the latter’s recorded debut. Singer Sabrina Ellis turns in another masterful performance, in equal parts brash, defiant, vulnerable, and raw.

Lyrically, Sabrina and Andrew have a gift for making their personal frustrations and fuck-ups, fears, lusts, and addictions feel universal. While they have always given voice to the weirdos and creeps—showing that their peccadilloes and peculiarities are much more deep-seated and widespread—they dig even deeper on Toy. “I feel I’ve revealed more in this album than ever before,” Sabrina confesses. Still, the band doesn’t sacrifice an ounce of catchiness or charm when tackling issues like aging, agency, and mortality, as embodied in opening single “Photograph.”

The band recorded Toy with Grammy-winning engineer Stuart Sikes (Loretta Lynn, Cat Power, The White Stripes, Reigning Sound), and singer/songwriter/guitarist/wildman Cashen produced it. “Andrew as producer makes a lot of sense,” Sabrina says. “He composes the songs and knows better than anyone what they should sound like in the end. With him at the helm, we’ve arrived at a raw, truthful, risky, and rangy album.”

Pre-order Toy in the Merge store on CD and limited-edition opaque lipstick-red vinyl, or digitally here. Lucky for us, A Giant Dog will be no strangers to the road in 2017, with plenty of dates already announced and more to come. Buy tickets, and be prepared…

Lea Porcelain unveil new single and video "A Year From Here" - 'Hymns To The Night' coming June 16

LEA PORCELAIN

Unveil New Single and Video

Hymns To The NightDebut Album Coming June 16

"How does time affect our life and how do we deal with it?" Lea Porcelain question in their new video 'A Year From Here'.  "Probably one of the most important and primal challenges for humankind is dealing with age and evanescence. Because humans are mortal, and the days when we are lonely, down and feel that lack of motivation, are the days that we fight against in our everyday life."

Lea Porcelain want to give every viewer "the feeling that is just a human emotion and these days that seem dark - when everything you see is black and white - are the days in which it is also important to make progress, to recapitulate and to change your life if it needs changing."
BlackBook debuted the video describing the "piercingly visceral new single sets a melancholy vocal against a sweep of mournful, majestic strings - shades of The xx and early New Order. It's a poignant, pithy drama for our growing culture of modern alienation."

Lea Porcelain's forthcoming debut Hymns To The Night was written and recorded over a two year period in Berlin's FUNKHAUS, a broadcasting house created under Soviet supervision that now houses the world's biggest recording studio. The spectrum of the album is extremely wide. Hymns To The Night bends genres, yet every song works together, playing with very different moods.  Lea Porcelain describe their sound "atmospheric, cinematic and melancholic".

Before Lea Porcelain, project members Julien Bracht and Markus Nikolaus were working within completely separate musical spheres. Bracht was a successful techno producer touring the world, Nikolaus a go-to independent musician, navigating between Berlin and the rest of the world.

Lea Porcelain aim to make "universal" music; songs people can treasure in day, night, between different states of mind. They want to make music for "the entire world", and this partly stems from a globe-trotting past.  No matter the genre, range of instruments or sound palette, their presence is unmistakable. Every song is tied together by the duo's ethos, their free approach towards making music.  In the standout moments of their debut, everything spills outwards, drums cascading into the distance, a cross between self-destruction and complete euphoria.

Alice Cooper Reunites Original Band - Announces New Single

ALICE COOPER REUNITES WITH ORIGINAL BAND FOR MUSIC INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION WEEK AWARD

NEW SINGLE "PARANOIC PERSONALITY" OUT JUNE 9TH

Left to right: Music Business Association President Jim Donio, Neal Smitih, Michael Bruce, Dennis Dunaway, Alice Cooper, and Baker & Taylor VP/GM Steve Harkins.

Photo courtesy of The Music Business Association

Fans of rock icon Alice Cooper know there are some aspects to his live shows that they can expect, including a hard rocking performance of horror theatrics; however, following Alice Cooper's customary execution via guillotine at his recent Nashville concert on May 14th, fans were treated to something rarely seen since 1975. The stage went dark, and the original band, including bassist Dennis Dunaway, guitarist Michael Bruce and drummer Neal Smith reunited to perform five classic songs with Alice. This followed the recent announcement that his forthcoming album -
Paranormal, out July 28th on earMUSIC - will include two new recordings featuring the original line-up.

Joined by current band member Ryan Roxie filling in for the late Glen Buxton on guitar, the band ripped through "I'm 18," "No More Mr Nice Guy," "Muscle of Love," "Billion Dollar Babies" and then closed with "School's Out," bringing back current band members drummer Glen Sobel, bassist Chuck Garric, and guitarists Nita Strauss and Tommy Henriksen for a grande finale.

The following day, the original band was honored by The Music Business Association at their annual convention, with an award for their historic achievements.  The award was presented to them by Bob Ezrin, who produced their iconic albums Love It To Death, Killer, School's Out, and Billion Dollar Babies as well as many subsequent solo Alice Cooper albums, including the forthcoming Paranormal.

Paranormal features two songs written and recorded with original members - Alice, Dennis, Neal and Michael, as well as guest appearances by ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons, U2 drummer Larry Mullen, and Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover. The first single, "Paranoic Personality" will be released Friday, June 9th.

Alice Cooper is on tour throughout the 2017. Full North American tour dates below.

“Along with the Melvins and ISIS (the band), Dälek helped form the foundation of our label,” said Ipecac Recordings co-founder Greg Werckman. “We could not be happier to be working with them again. They remain unique and uncompromising and continue to defy genre limitations.”

BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE RELEASES NEW SONG "SKYLINE"

BSS also introduces the new Broken Playlist App For Spotify
Toronto's Broken Social Scene have today shared "Skyline," the third track released from their upcoming album Hug of Thunder, out on Arts & Crafts on July 7th, 2017."Skyline" is available for purchase and streaming HERE. The track is released in advance of Broken Social Scene's appearances at both Primavera Sound in Barcelona, Spain and headlining Field Trip in Toronto, ON this weekend.

Broken Social Scene have also unveiled the Broken Playlist App for Spotify.  With over 100 songs in their critically acclaimed catalogue, the Broken Playlist App creates dynamic, one-of-a-kind playlists of Broken Social Scene songs for whatever mood you want - from makeout music to beach days to road trip anthems and more. Click HERE to check out the app.

Produced by Joe Chiccarelli and mixed by Shawn EverettHug Of Thunder is everythingBSS fans love from the Canadian collective and then some, an album overflowing with glorious open chords, multi-voice harmonies, spacious psychedelia-tinted breakdowns, and more.  It is a panoramic, expansive album that manages to be both epic and intimate; and like all things BSS, in troubled times, it offers a serotonin rush of positivity.  Since their inception in the early Aughts, BSS have always pushed sonic boundaries while remaining reverent of a perfect chorus; almost twenty years down the line, Hug Of Thunder sharpens that balance.  The record's twelve songs refract the band's varying emotions, methods, and techniques in ways that not only reference their other albums, but surpass them.  Hug Of Thunder is righteous but warm, angry but loving, melodic but uncompromising.  And if you've ever fallen in love with Broken Social Scene - as many of us have - it is a perfect return that was truly worth the wait.
